We are a month away from the beginning of the 2020-2021 high school season for some states and due to the COVID-19 breakout, some states have postponed the start of their winter sports. A few of the nations top high school basketball tournaments, showcases, and events have been cancelled as well due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Chic-Fil-A Classic, Cancer Research Classic, KD Hoopfest (Seattle, Dallas, Memphis, and Tampa Bay), Slam Dunk to the Beach, and others will not be played this season. The good news is that some of the best national events are still on schedule for this season and below we take a look at which events those are.
Thanksgiving Hoopfest (Dallas, Texas)
The Dallas Thanksgiving Hoopfest has recently announced that the event will still be played this upcoming season but with a brand new look. The event is usually played the two days after Thanksgiving, but due to the UIL state regulations in Texas, this year's event will be one night only on Saturday November 28th. The Thanksgiving Hoopfest this season will feature a double header between four top tier national programs. Ypsi Prep Academy (MI), a program featuring Michigan State commit 2022 F Emoni Bates, is expected to face Dallas's own Duncanville (TX) in one of the double headers. This season's event is also expected to once again be played at the American Airlines Arena, home of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks.
City of Palms Classic (Fort Myers, Florida)
Every single season the City of Palms Classic gives us a special few days of high level high school basketball. This season should be no different as the 2020 City of Palms Classic is still on as scheduled December 18-23rd in Fort Myers, Florida. A plethora of high level programs are expected to hit South Florida this December. Top tier programs like Montverde Academy (FL), IMG Academy (FL), Westtown School (PA), Wasatch Academy (UT), Compass Prep (AZ), Legacy Early College (SC), West Oaks Academy (FL), and others are expected. Highly rated prospects like 2022 C Jalen Duren, 2023 G Mikey Williams, 2022 G Skyy Clark, 2021 F Jabari Smith Jr., 2022 PG Jaden Bradley, 2023 F Matt Bewley, 2021 F Frank Kepnang, and a bunch more are expected to hit the floor during the annually famous event.
Beach Ball Classic (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina)
The Beach Ball Classic has always been one of the few top tier national events to attend post Christmas and this season will be one to mark down on the calendar for sure. The 2020 Beach Ball Classic has been confirmed and is on scheduled to be played December 26-31st. The field of teams include multiple nationally ranked programs coming into the season and a boat load of high level talent will be expected to hit the court. Combine Academy (NC), Archbishop Wood (PA), Milton (GA), John Marshall (VA), West Oaks Academy (FL), Calvary Christian (FL), Blythewood (SC), and others are on tap to attend. Prospects like 2022 PG Bruce Thornton, 2022 F Gregg Glenn, UConn commit 2021 PG Rahsool Diggins, 2022 F Julian Phillips, 2023 PG Robert Dillingham, Indiana commit 2021 C Logan Duncomb, and more will be in attendance.
Spalding Hoophall Classic (Springfield, Massachusetts)
MLK Weekend has always been the weekend for the famous and annual Spalding Hoophall Classic, which has always been played at Springfield College in Massachusetts. As of today, the 2021 Spalding Hoophall Classic will be played as scheduled on MLK Weekend. The event is expected to be deep with talent across the board once again and if everything falls as planned then we should be in for a fantastic showcase. Montverde Academy (FL), Sunrise Christian (KS), IMG Academy (FL), Oak Hill Academy (VA), DeMatha Catholic (MD), Camden (NJ), and possibly more are expected to attend the 2021 Spalding Hoophall Classic. Lake Norman Christian (NC), a program who recently added highly 2023 G Mikey Williams, is also expected to appear in Springfield, Massachusetts this upcoming January.
Hoophall West (Phoenix, Arizona)
There is a Hoophall East, which is played in Springfield, Massachusetts, and there is a Hoophall West, which is played in Phoenix, Arizona. The Hoophall West event has always been apart of the Spalding Hoophall Classic and is usually played in early December. Due to the coronavirus outbreak and some state regulations postponing their winter sports, the Hoophall West will now be played on January 27-30th in Phoenix, Arizona. Before the reschedule, teams like O'Dea (WA), DeMatha Catholic (MD), Bishop O'Dowd (CA), Coronado (NV), Pace Academy (GA), Oak Hill Academy (VA), and others were expected to play out in Phoenix. As of right now, a few changes have been made regarding the field but the event will still feature a plethora of next level talent and some of the nations top programs will be apart of it.
