The official national top-25 rankings were released just a week ago and here we have our official top-25 public schools only rankings coming into the 2021-2022 high school season.
Most public schools across the country are set to begin their season this week with exhibition games before their season opener. A few programs have been moved around since our latest release back in August.
This season there will be weekly public school ranking updates aside from the national top-25 rankings. Below you can find out which 25 public schools begin the season ranked in our top-25.
1. Camden (NJ)
Last Season Record: 13-0
Season Opener: 12/17 v. Roselle Catholic (NJ)
The Panthers stay put as our number one public schools program in the country coming into the 2021-2022 high school season. They are also ranked number eleven in the top-25 national rankings that were posted just last week. Camden has a 38-game winning streak on the line coming into the year and will certainly put that to test as they face multiple elite programs. 2023 PG D.J. Wagner and 2023 C Aaron Bradshaw headline their elite roster once again this upcoming season.
2. Dr. Phillips (FL)
Last Season Record: 24-3
Season Opener: 11/24 v. Lake Highland Prep (FL)
Dr. Phillips High School came in ranked number sixteen in our official preseason top-25 national rankings last week and come in the top-25 public school rankings at number two in the country. 2022 PG Denzel Aberdeen (Florida), 2022 C Ernest Udeh Jr. (Kansas), and 2022 SG Riley Kugel (Mississippi State) all return from last season's state championship squad. The Panthers are going to be looking to defend that class 7A state title in the FHSAA while playing a national schedule this upcoming season.
3. Whitney Young (IL)
Last Season Record: 15-1
Season Opener: 12/4 v. Gonzaga HS College (DC)
One of the best programs out of Chicago every single year, Whitney Young will be one of the nation's top programs coming into the 2021-2022 high school season. They currently ranked at number three here in our public school top-25 preseason rankings and nineteen in our national top-25 preseason rankings. 2022 F A.J. Casey (Miami) headlines their 2021-2022 high school season roster for now with other key pieces and the Dolphins will be looking to capture the Chicago Public League championship.
4. North Little Rock (AR)
Last Season Record: 20-2
Season Opener: 11/13 @ Bentonville (AR)
After a fight for 2022 SG Nick Smith Jr. (Arkansas) to be cleared to play his senior season, the Charging Wildcats have been labeled a top-25 national team coming into the 2021-2022 high school season. North Little Rock will be hitting a few top tier events nationally and will also return 2022 C Kel'el Ware (Oregon) to the roster this season. They will be looking to repeat as state champions and defend their class 6A AHSAA title. Charging Wildcats are in national events like the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, City of Palms Classic, and Battle in the Bluff.
5. Milton (GA)
Last Season Record: 28-3
Season Opener: 11/24 v. North Gwinnett (GA)
The Eagles are currently the favorites to re-capture their class 7A GHSA state championship by the end of this season. Milton comes in as the number five best public school in the country and will be playing one of the most difficult schedules a public school program can play. Their elite backcourt of 2022 PG Bruce Thornton (Ohio State) and 2023 G Kanaan Carlyle return and added pieces like 2022 G Chase Cormier (Northeastern) and 2022 F Jonathan Murray will help the Eagles on the floor throughout their season.
6. Duncanville (TX)
Last Season Record: 29-1
Season Opener: 11/12 @ Shadow Creek (TX)
Duncanville High School dropped a few spots in our official preseason public school rankings since August, but they still are one of the top public school basketball programs in the country. The Panthers will be looking to defend their UIL class 6A state championship this upcoming season and have leaders like 2023 F Ron Holland, 2022 PG C.J. Ford (Northern Arizona), and 2023 F Cam Barnes all returning to the lineup. No Anthony Black as of now definitely hurts the Panthers but head coach David Peavy and his staff will still have a plethora of tough individuals on the roster who are ready to step up for the Texas powerhouse.
7. Corona Centennial (CA)
Last Season Record: 21-2
Season Opener: 11/16 v. Paloma Valley (CA)
Corona Centennial has been in the mix nationally over the last three years or so and will be coming into the 2021-2022 high school season ranked in the top-10 in our official public school preseason rankings. The Huskies finished their 2020-2021 high school season with a 21-2 overall record while capturing the CIF Southern Section title. 2023 PG Jared McCain will headline their season roster this year and will play a national schedule. The Huskies will be expected to play in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, Hoophall West, Spalding Hoophall Classic, and others.
8. Imhotep Charter (PA)
Last Season Record: 14-0
Season Opener: 12/10 v. Reading (PA)
Imhotep Charter will be back as one of the Northeast's most consistent basketball programs coming into to the 2021-2022 high school season. The Panthers rank eighth in our preseason public schools top-25 national rankings to begin the year. Their roster includes multiple high level prospects such as 2023 F Justin Edwards, 2022 PG Naji Reid, 2024 G Ahmad Nowell, 2023 PG Rahmir Barno, and others. The Panthers will have some key quality games throughout the season to have a chance to move up in the rankings.
9. Richardson (TX)
Last Season Record: 26-2
Season Opener: 11/13 v. Mansfield Timberview (TX)
2022 G Cason Wallace (Kentucky) and 2022 SG Rylan Griffen will be one of the top duos in the nation to keep tabs on throughout the 2021-2022 high school season. The Eagles will be playing more of a national schedule this season and will have some key matchups early on to begin the year. They are one of the top teams in the Lone Star state and one of the favorites to capture the UIL class 6A state championship this season. Richardson High School is just one of five Texas schools on the list of top-25 public schools rankings.
10. Beaumont United (TX)
Last Season Record: 31-0
Season Opener: 11/12 v. Cypress Ranch (TX)
Beaumont United hits an incredible buzzer beater to end their phenomenal 2020-2021 high school season just a few months ago and are coming in on a 31-game winning streak. 2022 F Terrence Arcenaux (Houston) and 2023 G Wesley Yates III headline their roster once again this upcoming season. The Timberwolves will have a target on their back with their winning streak on the line every game and will have some key games this season. Beaumont United rounds out our top-10 in our top-25 preseason public schools national rankings.
11. Berkmar (GA)
Last Season Record: 25-6
Season Opener: 11/27 v. Greenforest Christian (GA)
Berkmar High School was close to capturing their first state championship since 2001 after falling to nationally ranked Milton High School back in March. The Patriots will come in ranked number eleven in our top-25 public schools national rankings. The Patriots will be playing a tough national schedule this season and top guys like 2022 F Malique Ewin (Ole Miss), 2022 G Jermahri Hill, and 2022 PG Jameel Rideout all return to the roster for last season's runner-ups. Berkmar could see themselves back in the GHSA class 7A state title game again in March.
12. Wheeler (GA)
Last Season Record: 27-5
Season Opener: 11/20 v. Grayson (GA)
The Wildcats will begin their season against three top quality programs from three different states, including a matchup with powerhouse Montverde Academy (FL) on 11/27 at the Holiday Hoopsgiving. Wheeler has won back-to-back state titles in both 7A and 6A in the Peach State and will look to go for three straight this upcoming season. 2023 PG Isaiah Collier will headline their overall roster once again this season and will be the leader of the group in their route to their third straight state championship.
13. Sunnyslope (AZ)
Last Season Record: 21-1
Season Opener: 12/3 v. Brophy College Prep (AZ)
Sunnyslope High School comes in ranked number thirteen in our top-25 preseason public schools national rankings. The Vikings are the defending AIA class 6A state champions and will be the favorites to reclaim that state title by the end of the 2021-2022 high school season. They will return their star duo with 2022 F Elijah Saunders (San Diego State) and 2022 PG Oakland Fort (Northern Arizona) to the roster this season with a couple other pieces. The Vikings are one of two Arizona's programs currently in the public school top-25.
14. Kimball (TX)
Last Season Record: 25-11
Season Opener: 11/12 v. Universal Academy (TX)
One of the favorites to win the UIL class 5A state championship down in Texas this season, Kimball High School. The Knights fell short of a state championship during the 2020-2021 high school season after losing to Beaumont United (TX) in overtime on a three-point buzzer beater. 2022 G Arterio Morris (Texas) has returned to Kimball after briefly suiting up for iSchool Lewisville and will look to lead the Knights back to the state title game this season alongside 2022 G Chauncey Gibson (Clemson).
15. Centerville (OH)
Last Season Record: 26-3
Season Opener: 12/3 @ Springfield (OH)
One of the best programs in the state of Ohio the last few years, Centerville High School has come into the 2021-2022 high school season ranked number fifteen in our top-25 public school preseason national rankings. The Elks will look to defend their OHSAA Division I state championship this season with their star duo 2023 PG Gabe Cupps and 2022 F Tom House (Florida State) returning to the roster. Centerville is expected to play in the famous Flyin to the Hoop showcase and also have key games against quality opponents.
16. Kenwood Academy (IL)
Last Season Record: 10-2
Season Opener: N/A
Kenwood Academy was one of a couple public school programs that were not apart of the list of teams we had in the top-25 back in late August. The Broncos lost highly rated prospect J.J. Taylor recently but will still be one of the top teams in the nation coming into the season. 2022 PG Trey Pettigrew (Nevada), 2023 G Darrin Ames, 2025 SG Bryce Heard, 2023 F Davius Loury, and others are still apart of the team. Kenwood Academy is expected to play a tough national schedule still throughout the season and should have their opportunity to move up in the rankings.
17. Simeon (IL)
Last Season Record: 8-1
Season Opener: 11/27 @ Houston County
The Powerhouse Chicago school, Simeon High School, should be one of the best public school programs not only in the state of Illinois but the entire country once again this upcoming season. The Wolverines played a short amount of games during the 2020-2021 high school season due to the impact of COVID-19. They finished with an 8-1 overall record. Simeon will have plenty of chances to move up in the rankings this season as they are set to play a few top tier programs outside the state of Illinois and in state as well.
18. Coronado (NV)
Last Season Record: N/A
Season Opener: 11/26 v. Wagner (TX)
No season for the Coronado Cougars last season as the NAIA decided to just shut things down to the coronavirus pandemic. The Jaden Hardy era is over for Coronado but the program is still going to be relevant throughout this season with the roster and schedule they have. 2022 PG Pop Pop Isaacs has returned to his home and will run the show alongside 2023 F Osiris Grady. The Cougars come in ranked at number eighteen in the preseason public school top-25. They are expected to play in a few national events like the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, Tarkanian Classic, Hoophall South, and more.
19. Perry (AZ)
Last Season Record: 15-3
Season Opener: 11/30 @ North (AZ)
One of two Arizona programs ranked in the top-25 public school preseason national rankings, Perry High School moves themselves up a few spots since our updated list back in late August. The Pumas finished their 2020-2021 season with a 15-3 overall record and should be even better this season. They will be one of the best programs in the state of Arizona this season with the return of 2022 C Dylan Anderson (Arizona) and 2023 SG Cody Williams. One of the nation's top incoming freshmen, 2025 F Koa Peat, will also be apart of their roster this upcoming season. One of the favorites to capture the AIA 6A state title.
20. Carmel (IN)
Last Season Record: 26-2
Season Opener: 11/23 v. Zionsville (IN)
Carmel High School, which sits just outside of Indianapolis, will be one of the top programs in the Midwest this upcoming high school season after finishing the 2020-2021 high school season with a 26-2 overall record and capturing the IHSAA class 4A state title. The Greyhounds will return key pieces like 2022 C Charlie Williams (William & Mary), 2022 G Josh Whack, and 2023 F Sam Orme to their roster. They are the current favorites to reclaim the class 4A state championship and a possible undefeated season could be in store for this program, who come in ranked at number twenty.
21. Cane Ridge (TN)
Last Season Record: 15-1
Season Opener: 11/16 @ Lebanon (TN)
One of the best teams coming out of the state of Tennessee this upcoming season will without question be Cane Ridge High School. The Ravens reached the TSSAA Division I class 3A state championship last season before losing to Houston (TN). They will be one of the favorites to win this season's state championship with the return of highly rated 2022 F Brandon Miller (Alabama). Cane Ridge will return other key prospects as well for the 2021-2022 high school season and is also expected to have some key matchups on the national level.
22. McKinney (TX)
Last Season Record: 25-3
Season Opener: 11/12 v. Wagner (TX)
McKinney High School, which is right outside of Dallas, Texas, is the fifth Texas high school program on the top-25 public schools national rankings and well deserved. The Lions finished their 2020-2021 high school season with a 25-3 overall record. They return their start duo 2023 SG Jakobe Walter and 2022 F Alex Anamekwe (SMU) to their roster and will be one of the favorites to capture the UIL class 6A state championship. The Lions will have some top tier matchups this season as they will face some of the best teams in Texas and beyond.
23. Vashon (MO)
Last Season Record: 16-1
Season Opener: N/A
Vashon High School, a public school out of St. Louis, Missouri, is one of the Midwest Region's most consistent and elite basketball programs and has recently been one of the best in the country. The Wolverines make their debut in our top-25 preseason public school rankings and come in at number twenty-three. Vashon won their third straight MHSAA class 4A state championship last season and will look to make it four. They will be filled with some young elite prospects on their roster this season and will have a national schedule once again.
24. Ridge View (SC)
Last Season Record: 14-3
Season Opener: 11/16 @ Sumter (SC)
The Blazers played a short amount of games last season going 14-3 overall and reaching the SCHSL class 5A quarterfinals before being eliminated by Dorman (SC). Ridgeview will bring back half of their roster from a year ago headlined by 2023 Gregory Jackson II. They will not only be one of the best public schools in the Southeast region but the entire country as well. The Blazers are planned to play a national schedule this upcoming season and are one of the favorites to capture the SCHSL class 5A state championship.
25. Pebblebrook (GA)
Last Season Record: 25-4
Season Opener: 11/16 v. Camp Jewell House Academy (GA)
The Pebblebrook Falcons have been one of the most consistent and best basketball programs in the Peach State for several years now and that trend should continue into this season. They lose a few seniors from last season's team but will be bringing in a very gritty and tough group. Guys like 2022 G Andre Young (Troy), 2022 G Nyle Hilmon, 2022 F Kendall Campbell, and 2022 G Kami Young will be key pieces apart of the Falcons program this season. Pebblebrook should be able to move up the rankings throughout the season with the tough schedule they have. They round out our top-25 preseason public schools rankings and are the fourth Georgia program on the list.
